Air Sealing & Insulation
Sealing and insulating the “envelope” or “shell” of your home is a cost effective measure for improving comfort and energy efficiency in your home. This includes sealing air leaks throughout the home to stop drafts in and around outer walls, ceilings, windows, doors and floors and adding insulation to attics, basements and crawlspaces to block heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.
Different types of products can be used to address different types of air leaks depending on your home’s needs:
- Caulk, spray foam, and weather stripping
- Plywood, drywall, or rigid foam insulation
- Sheet metal and high-temperature caulk
Insulation performance is measured by R-value – its ability to resist heat flow. Different R-values are recommended for walls, attics, basements and crawlspaces with the most common types being:
- Fiberglass, cellulose, rigid foam board and spray foam
- Reflective or radiant barrier
